Sheet 01 Home Continuity Blueprint

Help protect the home behind the mortgage.

A mortgage is a promise that outlives a paycheck. Mortgage protection is a way of using life insurance so that, if something unexpected happens to you, the people you leave behind may have money available to help manage mortgage payments and other financial responsibilities. This page explains how it generally works, in plain English, before anyone asks you for anything.

Educational conversation. No obligation. Coverage is not issued or bound online.

Sheet 02 Protection Overview

Mortgage protection, in plain English

"Mortgage protection" is not a separate category of product with one fixed definition. It generally describes life insurance purchased with a specific purpose in mind: giving a household a source of money if the person paying the mortgage passes away.

What the term usually means

In most cases, mortgage protection refers to a life insurance policy sized and timed around a mortgage. Some people match the coverage amount to their remaining balance. Others match the policy length to the years left on the loan. The insurance itself is ordinary life insurance; the planning is what makes it "mortgage protection."

How the money may help

If a claim is approved, life insurance proceeds are generally paid to the named beneficiaries. Those funds may help a family keep making mortgage payments, pay down or pay off the loan, or cover entirely different needs such as childcare, income replacement, or day-to-day expenses. What actually happens depends on the policy and the family's circumstances.

Who decides how it is used

Beneficiaries generally decide how to use the benefit, unless the policy language, a collateral assignment, or another binding arrangement states otherwise. Mortgage protection does not usually pay the lender directly, and a beneficiary is not usually required to apply the money to the loan.

Availability varies

Product availability, eligibility, premiums, coverage amounts, policy terms, limitations, and exclusions vary by state, carrier, underwriting, and individual circumstances. Two households with similar mortgages can end up with different options available to them.

Worth stating clearly: mortgage protection is not the same thing as private mortgage insurance (PMI), and it is not homeowners insurance, a lender product, or a government program. It is life insurance. This website provides general educational information and does not provide individualized insurance, legal, tax, or financial advice.

Sheet 03 Comparison

Mortgage protection versus PMI

These two are confused constantly, partly because both appear on a homeowner's monthly bill at some point. They serve different parties and answer different questions.

General comparison for educational purposes only
Topic Private mortgage insurance (PMI) Mortgage protection (life insurance)
Who it protects Generally protects the lender if a borrower stops paying. Intended to help protect the homeowner's household or named beneficiaries.
Why it exists Often required by the lender when a down payment is below a certain threshold. Chosen voluntarily as part of a household's own planning. It is not required by anyone.
Who receives money The lender or mortgage insurer, under the lender's arrangement. The named beneficiaries, if a claim is approved under the policy.
When it may pay Tied to borrower default, according to the lender's contract. Tied to the insured event described in the policy, subject to policy terms.
How it ends Typically ends under conditions set by the loan and applicable rules. Ends according to the policy, such as at the end of a term or if the policy lapses.
Where to confirm Your lender, servicer, and loan documents. The policy documents and a licensed insurance professional.

Exact insurance benefits depend on the policy that is actually issued. Review your own lender documents for anything related to PMI, and speak with a licensed professional about your situation. Nothing on this page is individualized legal or financial advice.

Sheet 04 How It Works

The Home Continuity Review

Three steps, in order. There is no step where you are asked to decide something on the spot, and no step that happens without you knowing what it is for.

Step 01

Understand the household

A conversation about who lives in the home, roughly what is left on the mortgage and how many years remain, who depends on the income, and what other responsibilities the household carries. No account numbers, no medical records.

Step 02

Discuss available options

Burak walks through what is generally available for circumstances like yours, what the trade-offs are, and what would still need to be verified through the normal application and underwriting process. Availability and eligibility vary.

Step 03

Decide, or don't

You decide whether any option is worth pursuing. "Not now" and "no" are complete answers, and neither one changes how your questions get answered. Nothing is applied for, changed, or bound during a review.

Sheet 05 Planning Considerations

What a household usually looks at

These are the inputs people tend to think through when they consider how much coverage, if any, makes sense. They are planning considerations, not a coverage calculation, and this website does not produce quotes, premiums, or estimates.

Consideration A

Remaining mortgage balance

What is actually still owed today, which is often different from the original loan amount.

Consideration B

Remaining mortgage term

How many years of payments are left, and whether the loan was recently refinanced or recast.

Consideration C

Household income responsibilities

Whose income the mortgage depends on, and what would change for the household without it.

Consideration D

Dependents

Children, aging parents, or anyone else whose day-to-day needs are tied to the home staying intact.

Consideration E

Existing coverage

Group coverage through an employer, individual policies already in force, and how portable they are.

Consideration F

Other ongoing household expenses

Property taxes, insurance, utilities, tuition, childcare, and other costs that continue regardless.

Reviewing these considerations does not determine eligibility or coverage amounts. Product availability, eligibility, premiums, coverage amounts, policy terms, limitations, and exclusions vary by state, carrier, underwriting, and individual circumstances.
